Bubbas Lounge, a BBQ restaurant in Harold Place, Hastings, submitted an application on October 19 to create a bar area in its ground floor along with a dance floor, seating, public toilets and an interconnecting door adjoining to the business on the first floor.
The business is applying for licensing hours which extend to 2am for the proposed club “Sonics”.
A petition was launched to object to the nightclub licence application due its location “directly underneath residential apartments, opposite a retirement facility and next to a children’s nursery”.
The petition said: “This location was a club more than 20 years ago before it was converted into residential homes. We have residents who have lived here peacefully for 20 years that now face a sizeable club venue promoting large ticketed events.
“Residents believe that this will encourage crime and disorder, public nuisance and ASB (anti-social behaviour) from the town centre up towards our building and residential space impacting our quality of life.
“Vulnerable residents and their carers at Homedane House have expressed concern for peace and rest, safe entry and exit at late hours and access for emergency vehicles.”
Harold Place used to be home to a nightclub called JR’s and later a Chinese restaurant.
Others took to social media to express their support for the application.
One said: “Hastings could definitely benefit from having it as a new night venue” while another said: “It’s underground in the town centre, why would this be a problem?”
The consultation period for the application ended at midnight on November 15 and the hearing is due to take place on 4 December.
