Oli Hawkins made an unexpectedly swift return on Saturday to fill a defensive gap for Gillingham, much to the delight of manager Mark Bonner.
The 32-year-old Hawkins, who played with a cast to protect his broken wrist, stepped up despite advice against playing due to a shortage of defensive options for the match at Doncaster. His commitment was especially noted with both captain Max Ehmer (suspended) and centre-back Conor Masterson (injured) unavailable, along with injuries sidelining potential makeshift defenders Robbie McKenzie and Tim Dieng.
Hawkins, who was transfer-listed at the end of last season but remained with the club, volunteered to play and partnered with Shad Ogie in central defense.
Bonner praised Hawkins for his physicality, experience, and leadership. “It was the best option for us,” Bonner said. “His presence and character are invaluable. He brings both defensive strength and a willingness to contribute even with a broken wrist, which is remarkable.”
Hawkins had been out of action after fracturing his wrist during training, missing games against Fleetwood and Chesterfield. His appearance on Saturday was his first under Bonner and showcased his versatility, having originally joined Gillingham as a striker but proving effective in both defensive and attacking roles.
