Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from London after the crash on suspicion of drug driving and causing death by careless driving.
Witnesses are being urged to come forward after the pedestrian, a 44-year-old man from West Chiltington, died on the A272 Bolney Road shortly after 1am.
Emergency services were called to the busy country road in Cowfold, near Horsham, in the early hours of Saturday morning, where members of the public had already started CPR on the 44-year-old pedestrian.
The road is a busy link between the A23 and Cowfold, Billingshurst and other Mid Sussex villages.
A helicopter with specialist trauma paramedics from the Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene and landed at around 1.30am.
The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.
His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist police officers. The 31-year-old Londoner remains in police custody.
