New Gillingham forward Marcus Wyllie was on the brink of making his league debut last weekend.
Having impressed Gills manager Mark Bonner during training, Wyllie was considered for inclusion in the match against Fleetwood on Saturday. However, the game’s circumstances led Bonner to use other substitutes from the bench.
Gillingham had several attacking options, including Aaron Rowe, Joe Gbode, Jonny Williams, and George Lapslie, all of whom came on during the match.
Bonner noted, “That’s the strength we have, and the players will see that regularly. Some in the team under-performed last week, and others this week. We need the competition to drive us to improve. To be a top team, we must constantly push ourselves to get better.”
He added, “While we are satisfied with our current position, we must keep improving to stay ahead as teams around us get stronger. We will.”
Bonner expressed satisfaction with the options available, mentioning that while Wyllie had not yet featured, he had trained exceptionally well. “We thought about using him for this game, but we opted for players who could bring physicality, pace, and power,” Bonner explained. “Later, we needed someone to link the game and control possession, which Jonny Williams did effectively.”
Wyllie, who joined Gillingham in July from non-league Enfield Town after a standout season with 34 goals that secured promotion via the Isthmian Premier play-offs, is expected to make his mark soon.
