Residents at The Waterfront, Goring, had to be evacuated from their homes after the fire broke out just before 2am this morning.
Crews from Worthing, Littlehampton, Lancing, Easton Preston as well as East Sussex attended the incident which took hours to get under control.
A 60-year-old man from Worthing has now been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody at this time.
Sussex Police said work is ongoing to ensure those unable to return to their homes are provided with suitable temporary accommodation.
Enquiries are ongoing, alongside the fire service, into the full circumstances of the incident. Anyone with any information has been asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 87 of 26/08.
