Students from the University of Sussex celebrated their graduation on Brighton beach, marking a significant milestone as thousands of young people received their degrees.
Dressed in caps and gowns, the new graduates posed for photos on the beach after walking across the stage at the Brighton Centre, signaling the end of their academic journey. The ceremony, held in sunny and pleasant weather, saw students capturing memories with friends and celebrating with family members along the promenade.
Throughout the week, thousands of graduates have been commemorating the conclusion of their studies at various events.
Among the graduates was Issy Waite, who, at 21, nearly became the UK’s youngest MP during the General Election, narrowly losing to University of Sussex alum Kemi Badenoch by just 2,610 votes.
Other notable graduates include Miysha Box, who contributed to cataloguing the university’s Black History Archives and launched the Black Studies library collection. Philosophy graduate Dr. Alister Scott, who played a role in the Global Rewilding Alliance and worked at Sussex Knepp Estate, also graduated 20 years after completing his PhD, witnessing his own children graduate in 2022 and 2023.
The ceremonies featured Isabella Tree, an acclaimed author and conservationist who co-founded the Knepp Rewilding project with her husband, Sir Charles Burrell. Isabella spoke to The Argus, expressing admiration for the graduates who had been “inspired and galvanized” by their time working on the estate.
She remarked, “Nature will come back and surprise you in the most unlikely areas and become a biodiversity hotspot. The rare and abundant species that have returned have astonished everyone. There are significant challenges ahead, and much of that involves effectively communicating what you’ve learned at university.”
