“Changes in Glasgow School Menus to Feature More Beans
In an effort to promote healthier and environmentally friendly diets, Glasgow schools are set to revamp their meal options. Starting in August for secondary schools and April next year for primaries, the council aims to incorporate more beans and pulses into student meals. This initiative, part of a city-wide campaign, highlights beans as a sustainable protein source and an alternative to meat.
Christina Cannon, Glasgow City Council’s education convenor, announced the collaboration with Food for Life Scotland to introduce bean-focused menus. The goal is to introduce straightforward recipes that will debut in secondary school menus by August 2024 and primary school menus by April 2025.
Recently, Notre Dame Secondary School hosted a training session on sustainable food practices, emphasizing seasonality and the benefits of beans. The initiative aligns with the Full of Beans campaign, supported by the Glasgow Food Policy Partnership and Glasgow Community Food Network, aimed at enhancing procurement and meal provisions across the city.
Councilor Seonad Hoy praised the efforts, emphasizing the importance of supporting local growers to supply beans for school meals and local businesses. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential cost benefits and additional training opportunities to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of beans.”
