David Pacera has been convicted of multiple sexual offenses following a jury trial.
On January 3, a woman reported to police that she had been raped and sexually assaulted by Pacera, 42, at a property in Worthing. He was promptly arrested on the same day.
The victim, who is entitled to lifelong anonymity under the law, received support and protection from specialized officers as Sussex Police initiated an investigation.
During the trial at Chichester Crown Court, a 90-minute audio recording made by the victim on January 3 was presented as crucial evidence. The recording captured her repeatedly saying “no” during the incident.
Following a five-day trial, Pacera, who has no fixed address, was found guilty on Friday, June 28, of rape, attempted rape, digital penetration, and sexual assault.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, July 5, at Hove Crown Court.
Detective Police Constable Ellie Treagust commended the victim for her resourcefulness in recording the assault, which played a pivotal role in securing the conviction.
“This was a heinous attack on a vulnerable victim,” said Treagust. “Despite the severity of her ordeal, she immediately reported the assault and had the presence of mind to gather evidence at the time.”
Treagust expressed gratitude to the victim for her courage in pursuing the investigation and appearing in court for the trial. She emphasized that the victim’s bravery has contributed to enhancing safety in Sussex.
Sussex Police encourages victims of sexual offenses to report incidents either online or via 101.
“In an emergency, always dial 999,” added a spokesperson from the police force. “You will be believed, supported, and we will work tirelessly to bring you justice.
