The child was walking with his family as they left the Morrisons store in St James’s Street in Kemp Town, Brighton when he was pushed over by a man walking past.
Sussex Police say they are now searching for the man and are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
A spokesman for the force said: “A seven-year-old boy was walking with his family leaving the store.
“As he walked, he was pushed over by a man walking in the other direction, causing him to fall backwards.
“Officers are investigating and want any pedestrians or witnesses in the area who saw what happened to come forward.”
Sussex Police they man who pushed the child over was of large build and estimated as in his 20s with a brown beard.
He was said to be wearing a blue woollen hat, a light blue or grey shirt, dark blue scarf, blue lanyard and dark trousers.
The incident happened at about 7.15pm on June 5.
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to report it to Sussex Police online or on 101, quoting serial 1448 of 05/06.
