The air ambulance was called in alongside several firefighters, police and paramedics after the incident on the A29 in Shripney, near Bognor last night.
Officers closed the road and taped off the pavement following the collision at around 9pm, between the junction with the A259 to the south of the village and near Woodgate, a mile north of Shripney.
The air ambulance landed in a field to the north east of Shripney at 9.15am. It left and returned to the base near Redhill an hour later at around 10.30pm.
Police investigators worked at the scene throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning. They packed up just before 7am and the road reopened shortly after.
Sussex Police has been approached for comment.
