UK-headquartered legaltech startup Lawhive has secured £9.5 million ($11.9 million) in a seed funding round to bolster its AI-driven platform tailored for small law firms. This investment aims to expand the accessibility of AI-powered legal services for local law practices.
While many legaltech startups have focused on serving large law firms (“Big Law”) with AI solutions, Lawhive distinguishes itself by targeting the broader market of smaller law firms often overlooked by existing legaltech players. The startup’s platform caters to solo practitioners and small law firms, offering tools for client management, onboarding, and document handling.
Lawhive leverages various AI models, including its proprietary in-house model, to streamline tasks like KYC/AML checks, client onboarding processes, and document summarization. The platform’s AI “Lawrence” is built upon a large language model (LLM) developed by Lawhive, boasting an impressive 81% score on the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), surpassing the passing grade of 55%.
Pierre Proner, CEO and co-founder of Lawhive, highlighted the significant market potential among the 10,000 small law firms in the UK facing operational challenges and rising costs. By addressing the consumer legal space, Lawhive aims to empower smaller firms with automation and efficiency tools traditionally reserved for larger enterprises.
The UK’s legal market, estimated at £25 billion, presents substantial opportunities for innovation to meet unmet legal needs among individuals and small businesses. Lawhive’s strategic approach combines its proprietary AI model with foundational models from leading AI providers, enhancing its ability to deliver tailored solutions to the legal sector.
With the seed funding, Lawhive plans to expand its operations into new markets, building on its success in the UK. The round was led by GV, Alphabet’s venture capital arm, indicating strong support and confidence in Lawhive’s vision to revolutionize legal services through technology-driven innovation.
