Family location services provider Life360 has introduced a new feature in its apps that automatically notifies friends and family members when you arrive at a destination after flying.

This notification feature utilizes phone sensors to track location, altitude, and speed to identify flight activities. Its algorithms can detect takeoff and landing times, sending alerts to family members once the user reconnects to the network post-landing.

According to Life360, this landing notification feature offers a convenient alternative to online flight trackers or waiting for updates from travelers. The feature is enabled for all users with the latest app update and can be disabled via the Flight Detection toggle in settings.

With over 66 million active users, Life360 allows individuals in a flight-taking user’s circle to see a plane icon as a movement indicator, complementing existing activities like walking, running, biking, and driving.

CEO Chris Hulls emphasized the company’s focus on safety and protection updates for users’ close circles, highlighting the distinctiveness of Life360’s solution compared to Apple’s more generic approach. The advantage of being available on both iOS and Android platforms was also noted.

Hulls mentioned plans for a new Tile lineup, acquired in 2021 for $205 million, without providing specific details. The company aims to create a unified hardware lineup featuring Bluetooth tags and GPS devices with LTE connections, offering a comprehensive service compared to Apple’s one-size-fits-all approach.

Life360 rolled out its premium membership in Canada in 2022 and in the U.K. in 2023. In the upcoming year, the company intends to expand its paid tier to Australia.
