London, UK – Odisha Day, or Utkala Dibasa, celebrates the state’s establishment as a separate entity on April 1, 1936. It delineated from the former Bihar and Orissa Province, predating Indian Independence, showcasing the country’s first linguistic demarcation-based state formation. This commemoration embodies Odisha’s rich heritage, from its iconic temples to vibrant dance forms like Odissi, and unique tribal traditions. It serves as a reflection of Odia resilience and unity, honouring their struggles and triumphs. Additionally, the occasion offers a gastronomic adventure through Odisha’s diverse cuisine, promising a blend of flavours and culinary delights, epitomizing the state’s cultural richness.
Odias from across the United Kingdom congregated in Ilford, London, to celebrate the 89th Utkala Dibasa, commemorating the formation of Odisha state. The event, organized by the Odisha Society of UK (OSUK), showcased the rich cultural heritage, culinary delights, and camaraderie of the Odia community on foreign shores.
Venue and Attendees The festivities took place in Ilford, London, attracting hundreds of Odias residing not only in London but also from Kent, Reading, Croydon, Manchester, Ireland, and Scotland.
Cultural Extravaganza The cultural programs featured a colourful array of performances representing Odisha’s diverse traditions. Local talents enthralled the audience with Odissi and Sambalpuri dances, folk performances like Rangabati, and musical renditions on piano and guitar. Adding a professional touch, Avirup Sengupta, a renowned Odissi dancer from Calcutta, graced the event with his mesmerizing performance. Bollywood singer Asit Tripathy regaled the audience with classic Odia songs, adding a nostalgic charm to the evening.
Odia Cuisine Attendees indulged in a culinary journey through Odisha with a delectable spread featuring traditional dishes like Aloo Potal, Ghanta Tarkari, Badi Chura, and Machha Besara, among others. The gastronomic experience was curated by Bindaas Restaurant, ensuring authenticity and flavor in every bite.
