Fuel prices have taken a noticeable upward turn recently, with the average cost of petrol rising by over 3p per litre and diesel prices increasing by 4p per litre. This data, provided by the RAC, indicates a shift from 140.0p to 143.3p for petrol and from 148.0p to 152.0p for diesel between January 29 and January 19.
This upswing follows a three-month period of declining fuel prices, which halted in mid-January. The surge in prices aligns with a rise in oil prices, which have consistently hovered above 80 US dollars a barrel for the past four weeks.
Simon Williams, a spokesperson for RAC fuel, expressed concern over the implications of this trend, suggesting that it could negatively impact both drivers and the broader economy. He attributed the price hikes to increased costs for retailers sourcing wholesale fuel due to the rise in oil prices.
Williams highlighted various factors contributing to the price increase, including geopolitical tensions such as the Red Sea attacks by Houthi rebels. These attacks have forced tankers to avoid the Suez Canal, opting instead to navigate around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Additionally, global refinery maintenance closures, the commencement of America’s driving season, and UK retailers stocking up on fuel ahead of potential tax hikes by the Chancellor have all played a role.
Despite these challenges, Williams suggested that forecourt prices may not rise significantly further from their current levels, contingent on the decisions of major retailers regarding profit margins.
