North Lanarkshire Council is working with Network Rail to rebuild the Sunnyside Road bridge in Coatbridge.
Known locally as the ‘Red Bridge’, the rail firm has requested a 7.5 tonne vehicle weight restriction on the road from April 8, 2024.
It is expected that the restriction will be in place until 2026 or 2027 when the bridge will potentially be rebuilt.
Due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge, a five-mile diversion route will be in place for all vehicles that exceed the weight restriction.
The suggested diversion route via Glenmavis for vehicles that exceed the weight limit will maintain the ‘B’ classification of the road.
The bridge is safe for traffic and the weight restriction is to help limit further deterioration of the bridge while ensuring it can remain open to most vehicles.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) will be informed of the weight restriction to allow them to consider the impact on bus services in the area.
Passengers who use buses will be informed of any changes to services before April 8.
