Drusillas Zoo Park welcomes tiny new monkey - UK Daily: Tech, Science, Business & Lifestyle News Updates

Drusillas  Zoo Park in Alfriston is looking after Rosie, a pygmy marmoset, which is the “smallest monkey in the world”.

She weighs just 108 grammes, less than four ounces.

Rosie arrived at Drusillas on January 30 from Shepreth Wildlife Park near Cambridge.

She is living with male pygmy monkey called Ben, sloths Flash and Gordon and some tortoises in the inner zoo.

A spokesman for Drusillas said: “We have someone new for you to meet this half term… welcome to the family, Rosie.

“Rosie is a pygmy marmoset which is the smallest monkey in the world, she weighs in at a teeny 108g.

“She is settling in brilliantly with her new mate, Ben.

“We’ve even spotted the two of them grooming each other which is a great sign of a successful pairing.”

Pygmy marmosets are native to South American rainforests and are listed as “vulnerable” on the threatened species list.

They are sometimes kept as domestic animals which is threatening the species survival.

Drusillas is hoping that Rosie and Ben may reproduce to help protect the species.

The spokesman said: “We very much hope that one day soon we will be hearing the pitter patter of the tiniest little feet.”
