Punters are bidding farewell to H’s Cafe in Coombe Road, Brighton, after owner Sonny announced the shock closure last night.
The greasy spoon has served up its popular full English breakfasts with builder’s tea for more than 20 years.
A statement was published on the cafe’s Facebook page and well-wishers have been sharing some of their best memories.
Diner Sandra Cooper wrote a heartfelt message on the cafe’s Facebook page. She said: “This is sad news indeed. I have enjoyed so many breakfasts in your cafe over the last 20 years and your excellent reputation goes far and wide.
“Thank you for all the delicious nosh and best wishes for your next adventure.”
Matty Evo added: “No way.. thought you’d always be there.
“Sonny always remembered our orders even if we hadn’t been in for 6 months, Brighton legends.”
The laid back cafe is on the corner of Coombe Road and Dewe Road, just behind the student flats in Lewes Road – but it proved popular with students and nearby residents alike.
A letter published by the cafe online said:
“Hi everyone, it’s with regret we have decided to close up.
“The last few years have been very challenging through the pandemic and also the ever increasing costs.
“Sonny and the staff would like to say a big thank you for making the last 20+years such a success but now feels like the right time for someone else to give it a go.”
But the Cafe’s reputation was even known outside of the city. Maxine Barnes, from Ipswich, said the venue was a must every time she comes to the city.
Former employee Madi Barnes shared her thanks to the team. “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Sonny, Sue and the team for welcoming me to my first ever weekend job a few years ago now”, she said.
“It was an absolute pleasure to work with you guys and thank you for giving me confidence and experience.”
The fryers will turn off for one last time on Friday, February 23, and is no longer open on Saturdays until then.
