Gillingham have handed a trial to an exciting non-league forward – who has also attracted interest from the Premier League.
Welling United academy director Garry Fiore confirmed that youngster David Kamara is hoping to impress at Gillingham.
Kamara, who has progressed from through the youth ranks at Welling, was named as one of the trialists who appeared for the Gillingham B Team during a match with Ipswich Town on Tuesday.
Back in November, it was reported that Premier League Luton Town were having a look at the exciting young talent.
First-team head coach Stephen Clemence admits his focus has been on the senior squad recently but the B Team continue to play an important role at the club.
Commenting on Kamara, Clemence said: “This week we have been on separate sites and I don’t know a great deal about that one if I am being totally honest. I am aware of it. It is not something I have been concentrating on.
“A lot of our B team players have been out on loan and they have come back now.
“I know Keith Millen has been working hard on getting fixtures. With the transfer window, my full focus has been on how our team performs on a match day and trying to improve the squad going forward.”
The B team was introduced during Neil Harris’ time in charge and it’s an addition that Clemence supports, saying: “It is really important and sometimes for an under-18/youth team player it is quite a big jump to go and play with first team players.
“To have that middle ground is the right step for them and if they are training next to the first team on the training ground, when we need a payer or players to come and help what we’re doing then that is their chance to come and impress, if they do that then why can’t they stay with us?
“It is definitely the right way to go about things. The B team boys when I have seen them they are doing ever so well, it is good to have them around, the right thing to do as a football club.”
Gillingham’s B Team include the likes of Taite Holtam, Sam Gale, Alex Giles, Josh Chambers, Ike Orji, Stan Skipper, Ronald Sithole and Joe Gbode.
