National Highways has said its teams will be working round the clock to clear almost 120 miles of roadworks in Sussex ahead of the big day.
They include roadworks across the A27 near Bognor, Patcham and Polegate.
Some of the works are complete but others will just be removed from motorways and major A roads from now until 12.01am on Tuesday, January 3.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “Being stuck in traffic can take the joy out of travelling home over the festive period.
“Given the disruption expected from the transport unions’ strike action and cold weather, I’m pleased that we could act to remove these roadworks – reducing congestion and helping people with their important journeys this Christmas.”
National Highways customer service director Andrew Butterfield said: “We don’t want roadworks to spoil Christmas so we’re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible, that’s why we’re keeping almost 98 per cent of the road network we manage free from roadworks. ”
Some of the roadworks which have been cleared include:
- 0.08 miles at A27 Grove Lodge to Lyons Farm (near Worthing)
- 0.85 miles at A27 Fontwell (near Bognor)
- 0.16 miles at A27 Vale Avenue to Patcham
- 0.2 miles at A27 Crockhurst Hill to Grove Lodge (near Worthing)
- 4.3 miles at A27 Polegate to Beddingham
