Members attended a hustings at the Hilton Metropole to vote on who should fight to flip the Green Party’s only seat in Parliament.
Tom Gray was chosen by Labour members on Sunday to go up against former Green leader Sian Berry at the next general election.
However, one voter pointed out that ballot papers told members they were voting to select a candidate for Earley and Woodley, near Reading, rather than Brighton Pavilion.
Selection for the new constituency also took place last weekend.
The names of the four candidates vying for the nomination in Brighton, however, were printed as expected.
A Labour spokesman said: “This was an administrative error, but it had no bearing on the outcome of the candidate selection process.
“We now have an excellent candidate in Tom Gray, who will work hard to win the trust of voters in Brighton Pavilion at the next election.”
