Adam Smith, councillor for Cumbernauld East, visited Cumbernauld Town Centre over the weekend where he noticed several problems with the building’s maintenance.
This included out-of-order automatic doors, buckets collecting rainwater leaking through the roof and a smashed window pane.
Images show the cracked glass, dozens of buckets and wet floor signs dotted throughout the centre’s main shopping promenade as well as the entrance doors blocked off.
We previously reported that North Lanarkshire Council purchased The Centre Cumbernauld (TCC) as part of a multi-million-pound programme to regenerate the area.
Speaking about the issues, Cllr Smith said: “While in Cumbernauld Town Centre this week I noticed a number of concerns in relation to the upkeep and maintenance of the centre.
“These concerns obviously aren’t new but, now that the centre is under the ownership of North Lanarkshire Council, I expect basic repairs to be carried out and the centre to be safe at all times.
“Concerns include a car park entrance closed off, automatic doors out of order, 25 buckets collecting rainwater in phase 4 alone, wet floor tiles, and a smashed window pane on the door to St Mungo’s Road.
“I have escalated these concerns to the council and asked for repairs to be undertaken and for the centre to be maintained in as good condition as possible given the plans for demolition and redevelopment in the coming years.
“I have been advised that these issues will be referred to the property management company to ensure works are carried out, and I have been informed that the roof within Tay Walk will be repaired next year following conclusion of a tender exercise.”
North Lanarkshire Council has been contacted for comment.
We also reported that regeneration plans will include work to improve the nearby Tryst sports centre, the library and other offices in the town centre, with facilities transferring to a new state-of-the-art hub.
